Bhaavya Roy-What challenges have you faced while preparing a look for Cannes—tight timelines, fittings, or last-minute changes?

Image
Preparing a look for the Cannes red carpet is both exhilarating and incredibly demanding, as Bhaavya Roy knows all too well. One of the biggest challenges she faces is working within tight timelines. “Cannes is a dream platform, but the schedule can be ruthless,” Bhaavya explains. From finalizing designs to sourcing the right fabrics — sometimes from across continents — every detail has to be executed with precision under strict deadlines. Another significant challenge is managing fittings, especially when celebrities are constantly traveling or working on film sets. “Coordinating fittings across time zones becomes a logistical puzzle,” says Bhaavya. Often, she has only one or two in-person sessions to perfect the garment before it’s shipped to France. Last-minute changes can also test her team’s agility. “There was a time we had to rework an entire train because of a last-minute weather update — it was going to rain, and the original fabric was too delicate,” she recalls. Bhaavya Roy-How do you ensure that a garment reflects both your design vision and the client’s personality?

Image
For me, fashion is storytelling—and every story deserves authenticity. When I begin working with a client, the first thing I do is listen. I try to understand not just what they want to wear, but who they are at their core. What makes them feel powerful? What moments in their life have shaped their taste, their confidence, their vulnerability? Once I understand that, I begin to weave their essence into the design. At the same time, I stay rooted in my own creative vision. The Bhaavya Roy aesthetic is about timeless elegance with a whisper of drama—clean cuts, detailed craftsmanship, and a bold yet graceful silhouette. So I take that language and translate the client’s personality into it, almost like customizing a melody to suit a particular voice. For example, if a client is more introverted but drawn to sophistication, I might choose a structured silhouette with softer, fluid fabrics to bring balance. If someone is fiery and fearless, I’ll play with textures, asymmetry, or a b...

How does Bhaavya Roy blend traditional Indian elements with modern fashion trends in her designs, and what does this fusion signify in today’s global fashion landscape?

Image
Bhaavya Roy’s approach to fashion design is a rich tapestry that skillfully weaves India’s cultural heritage with the sharp edge of modernity. Her signature style lies in her ability to harmonize the intricate craftsmanship of Indian textiles—like zardozi embroidery, handloom silks, and block prints—with minimalist and futuristic silhouettes often seen on international runways. This blending is not just aesthetic; it’s deeply intentional. For Bhaavya, fashion is a form of storytelling, and each garment is a narrative that honors the past while boldly stepping into the future. Her Met Gala debut serves as a prime example. The outfit featured hand-embroidered motifs inspired by ancient temple carvings, layered over a sharply structured metallic bodice and train—a juxtaposition that highlighted how heritage can coexist with high fashion. This kind of fusion challenges the conventional Western gaze on couture by placing Indian craftsmanship at the forefront of innovation, rather tha...

Bhaavya Roy – Which fashion week city inspires you the most — Paris, Milan, London, or New York?

Image
For Bhaavya Roy , every fashion capital brings its own heartbeat, its own creative rhythm—but if she had to choose one that truly stirs her soul, it would be Paris . “Paris is not just a city, it’s a feeling,” says Bhaavya. “It’s the birthplace of haute couture, where fashion isn’t just about trends—it’s about art, heritage, and storytelling through craftsmanship.” What draws her most to Paris Fashion Week is the unapologetic elegance it celebrates. The silhouettes, the textures, the slow drama of a sweeping gown—every show feels like a poem made of fabric. Paris inspires Bhaavya’s deep love for detail and emotional design . She admires how Parisian fashion houses balance bold innovation with timeless sophistication. “It’s where the past and the future shake hands,” she says. “You see a reverence for technique—intricate embroidery, hand-beading, couture draping—but there’s always a modern twist, something unexpected that keeps it fresh.” While she appreciates Milan for its powe...

Bhaavya Roy-What role does embroidery and handwork play in your designs?

Image
For Bhaavya Roy , embroidery and handwork are not mere decorative elements—they are the soul of her designs. She sees every stitch as a form of storytelling, a quiet dialogue between craft and emotion. In her collections, hand embroidery is used not just to beautify, but to evoke memory, celebrate heritage, and express individuality . Roy often draws inspiration from traditional Indian techniques such as zardosi, mukaish, and kantha, but reinterprets them with a modern sensibility. Rather than overwhelming the garment, her embroidery work is often subtle, textured, and deeply symbolic—reflecting fragments of nostalgia like handwritten letters, vintage postcards, or the patina of time-worn surfaces. She also emphasizes the ethical dimension of handwork , working closely with artisans across India to preserve endangered crafts and provide them with sustainable livelihoods. Each piece crafted under Bhaavya Roy's label is a collaboration—a fusion of her vision and the artisan’s han...

Bhaavya Roy – Can you walk us through your creative process when designing a trending red carpet or couture dress?

Image
Bhaavya Roy: Designing a red carpet or couture dress is a deeply layered process for me—both emotional and technical. It always begins with a story. I ask myself: what emotion or presence do I want the wearer to embody? Is it power, grace, rebellion, or vulnerability? Once that narrative is clear, I start sketching silhouettes that express that mood while paying attention to current trends—whether it's a daring neckline, exaggerated shoulders, or a particular fabric that’s in the spotlight. Then comes research—I look into global runway inspirations, vintage couture archives, and even art or architecture. But the heart of the design always comes from within. I experiment with drapes, textures, and structure in my studio until the dress starts to ‘speak’ back to me. Fittings and fabric trials are where the vision becomes tangible. And when it all comes together—the final piece must not just follow trends; it must make a statement, move with elegance, and spark emotion on the red c...

Image
Bhaavya Roy’s debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival was met with growing intrigue and admiration by international media, marking a subtle yet significant shift in how Indian fashion is perceived on the global stage. While established Western publications like Vogue , Elle , and Harper’s Bazaar did not focus extensively on her work in headline features, several fashion and culture outlets across Europe and Asia quietly spotlighted her presence as part of the rising wave of South Asian talent redefining red carpet narratives. Roy’s designs—rooted in traditional Indian craftsmanship yet unmistakably modern in silhouette—were celebrated for bringing a nuanced, culturally rich, and sustainable voice to an event often dominated by Western couture. Her collection included reimagined sarees with sculptural drapes, lehenga-inspired gowns made from upcycled textiles, and jackets detailed with threadwork from remote Indian artisan clusters. These choices resonated particularly with glob...

Bhaavya Roy-How do you incorporate traditional craftsmanship or textile techniques in your work?

Image
In an industry often driven by speed and surface, Bhaavya Roy stands out for her deep reverence for heritage and craft. Her design philosophy is rooted in the belief that fashion is not just about innovation, but also preservation—of stories, skills, and identities that have shaped generations. For Bhaavya Roy, traditional craftsmanship isn’t a trend; it’s a foundation. Each collection she creates is an intentional dialogue between past and present. She collaborates closely with artisans across India and beyond, working with handwoven textiles, natural dyes, and centuries-old techniques such as zardozi embroidery, bandhani, block printing, and kantha stitching. These are not simply decorative elements in her garments—they are vessels of culture and care. Her process is both intuitive and respectful: sourcing fabrics directly from weavers, understanding the origins of each technique, and reimagining them through a contemporary lens. Whether it’s placing a vintage weave into a sharpl...

Bhaavya Roy-Can you describe the detailing or techniques used in creating this dress?

Image
"Absolutely. Detailing is where the true spirit of a garment comes to life, and for me, it’s never just decorative—it’s narrative. As  Bhaavya Roy , I approach each design with a deep respect for craftsmanship and subtlety, and this dress is a reflection of that philosophy. The construction begins with a carefully chosen base fabric— a lightweight, breathable silk blend that drapes effortlessly and moves with grace. The fabric is pre-treated using eco-conscious methods to maintain its natural texture while giving it durability and structure. The surface detailing includes hand-embroidered motifs inspired by organic patterns—leaf veins, flowing lines, and architectural symmetry. I collaborated with skilled artisans to execute this embroidery using a blend of zardozi and threadwork , fusing traditional Indian techniques with a minimalist, contemporary aesthetic. One of my favorite features is the panel layering , subtly integrated into the hem and bodice to create depth without...

Image
Bhavya Roy’s Viral Tip: “Tell a Story, Not Just a Style” “The one tip that really changed the game for me was this: Don’t just show outfits— tell a story with them,” says Bhaavya Roy , whose fashion content has reached thousands online. Bhavya believes fashion content goes viral not just because it looks good, but because it feels something. In one of her most-shared videos, she styled a simple white saree—but paired it with a voiceover about her grandmother’s elegance, and what ‘grace’ means across generations. “It wasn’t the saree alone that people loved. It was the emotion, the memory, the connection. People shared it because they felt something.” She explains that when your audience can relate to your post—whether it’s nostalgia, empowerment, humor, or even vulnerability—they’re more likely to engage, comment, and share.  Her Quick Tips to Add Emotion to Fashion Content: Use voiceovers or text to add meaning to your looks. Create “transformation” or ...
